Lithuania's choice of "Attention" by Vilija Matačiūnaitė is another example of the skill the country has at modernizing non-contemporary tracks for the Eurovision Song Contest.
Lithuania has a knack for selecting songs for the Eurovision Song Contest that are not at all current and transforming them into something contemporary and quite palatable. That trend continues this year with the song "Attention" as performed by Vilija Matačiūnaitė. She has turned what could be describe as a mid-to-late 1990's R&B track into an almost-but-not-quite dubstep dancehall song:
What immediately impresses me about this entry is how challenging the vocal/lyric combination is. Trying to sing along with the track, it proves to be quite difficult not getting your tongue tied at the "I'm gonna make you make you fall / down d-d-down down on your knees" run. Vilija's ability to deliver this while bouncing around the stage is a feat of endurance. I think she still needs to work on her endurance and breathing to help give the song a richer tone, which can be accomplished in the next two months.
Although I tend to err toward less complicated staging in Eurovision performances, I think this song might benefit from having a couple more people on stage. Although Vilija has a dance partner in the performance, the story of the song lends itself to having some backup dancers. I am not suggesting that the team turns the song into a dramatic reenactment, but having some distractions present would add some pop to the call for "Attention."
This song is definitely an earworm and could be another sleeper success for Lithuania. Keep an eye on this one.
